PALO ALTO, CA - Freshman sprinter Ryan Westman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) placed fourth in the 400-meter dash at the 2003 Junior USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Palo Alto, CA, June 19-22.
With his personal-best time of 47.32 in the 400m dash, Westman was honored as a 2003 Verizon Junior All-American. To reach the finals, Westman finished third in his heat in the 400m preliminary trials with a time of 47.47.
Westman is now in the pool of athletes from which USATF will choose the relay team that will represent the US at the Junior Pan American Games in Barbados.
“Ryan’s goal was to put him in the position of going to Barbados and with his great personal best time, he has done that,” said Rutgers men’s track and field head coach Mike Mulqueen. “Since he missed the majority of the spring season with an injury, it is even more impressive that he was able to reach the finals. This is great for Ryan, for [sprints] coach Lou Tomlinson and for RU track.”
Westman was part of the 4x400 meter relay team that placed fourth (3:10.89) at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, NJ, May 18. The 4x400 team also placed fifth at the BIG EAST Championships on May 4 in Storrs, CT, with a time of 3:12.29.
