Sam Segond receives his first place award for discus |
STORRS, CT – The Rutgers men’s track and field team stands in third place after the second day of competition at the BIG EAST Conference Championships. The event is being held May 2-4 in Storrs, CT.
Sophomore Sam Segond (East Stoudsburg, PA) successfully defended his discus title with a winning throw of 184-1. Segond, who finished second in last year’s shot put competition, failed to place this year after fouling.
Senior Kevin Hester (Lakehurst, NJ) finished second in the high jump, clearing 6-9.5 in a NCAA regional-qualifying effort. Sophomore Anthony Butler (Pittsgrove, NJ) also scored for RU in the high jump, finishing in a tie for fourth with a clearance of 6-7.0.
Freshman Marquis Allen (Mays Landing, NJ) was the long jump runner-up, leaping 24-7.25 for a regional-qualifying distance.
Rutgers had two top-eight finishes in the decathlon, as sophomore Greg Ostrowicki (Howell, NJ) was fourth with 6,453 points and freshman Chris Stadler (Manasquan, NJ) was eighth with 6,197 points.
Several Scarlet Knights qualified for their event finals on May 4. Sophomore David Klics(Lincoln Park, NJ) advanced in the 200 meters (21.27) and 110-meter hurdles (14.09), winning his hurdles heat. Junior Luis Tomlinson (Willingboro, NJ) finished fifth overall to advance in the 400 meters (47.76).
Competition at the BIG EAST Championships will conclude Sunday, May 4.
