MIAMI, FL - Several members of the Rutgers men’s and women’s track and field teams began their 2006 outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, March 18, on the campus of the University of Miami.
On the men’s side, junior Joe Porter (Franklin, NJ) placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.74. Senior Marcel Coleman (Harrisburg, PA) finished fourth in 10.82, followed by juniors Rob Waters (Bellmawr, NJ) in fifth (10.88) and Charles Simmons (Elizabeth, NJ) in 11th (11.24). The quartet also competed in the 4x100-meter relay, recording a third-place finish in 41.11.
In the throws events, freshman Brandon Burkhardt (Dallas, PA) won the javelin with a throw of 61.25 meters, while senior Ian Menewisch (Laurel Springs, NJ) finished in fifth place with a mark of 55.46m.
The women’s team had a number of athletes compete in several different events, as freshman Jessica Bandy (West Keansburg, NJ) won the javelin throw with a toss of 42.20m, followed by sophomore Sylvia Galarza (Millville, NJ) in second place with a mark of 41.45m. Galarza also placed sixth in the discus (43.33m) and 10th in the hammer throw (43.61). Freshman Angelina Sancilio (Perrinevilee, NJ) also participated in the javelin, posting a sixth-place finish (36.92).
Senior Sarah Peterson (Belle Mead, NJ) finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:58.00. Senior Cycerli Ash (Beach Lake, PA) took third in the discus with a throw of 47.25-meters and placed seventh in both the shot put (13.48) and hammer throw (50.02).
Also competing on the women’s side were seniors Kahimah Liverman (Paterson, NJ) in the triple jump (11.96, seventh place), Maria Pavkovitch (Garfield, NJ) in the 3,000m run (10:40.86, ninth place) and junior Amanda Jacobs (Thompson, ND) in the javelin (35.73, seventh) and hammer (46.95, eighth).
