NEW YORK, NY - The Rutgers men's and women's indoor track and field teams will take part in the BIG EAST vs. Ivies Challenge on Friday, Jan. 27, at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Representing the BIG EAST Conference will be Rutgers, Connecticut and Seton Hall, while Columbia, Cornell and Princeton will compete for the Ivy League.
The men's team is fresh off a victory last weekend at the fourth annual Great Dane Classic, hosted by the University at Albany. The Scarlet Knights secured three first-place finishes and a total of 12 marks in the top-three.
Senior Ryan Westman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) posted a first place finish in the 500 meter run, clocking a time of 1:03.26 and in the field events, senior All-American Marquis Allen (Mays Landing, NJ) won the long jump with a leap of 7.64m, while freshman Brian Duggan (Staten Island, NY) took first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.80 meters.
On the women's side, Rutgers participated in the Penn State Open, a non-scoring meet which featured four teams (Rutgers, West Virginia, Penn State and Mt. St. Mary's).
Senior Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ) led the way, shattering the school record in the 55m hurdles and tying Rutgers' best performance in the 55 meter dash. Marshall won the 55m hurdles crown with a NCAA provisional time of 7.68, eclipsing the previous school record, set by Tishona Watson (7.87) in 1993. She also tied Andrea Conway's school-record mark set in 1988 with a winning time of 6.96 in the 55m dash.
Senior Dominique Sanon (Bridgeport, CT) won the 800 meter run in 2:13.66 and freshman Alison Caruana (Succasunna, NJ) placed first in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:15.89.
