  • RANDALL’S ISLAND, NY – Seniors Shameka Marshall (Mispah, NJ), Sam Segond (East Stroudsburg, PA) and junior Marquis Allen (Mays Landing, NJ) will represent the Rutgers University men’s and women’s track and field teams at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday, June 8 through Saturday, June 11 at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, CA.

The top five student-athletes in each event automatically advanced to the National Championship meet, while the remaining athletes have an opportunity to earn invites to the finals as an at-large entry. The NCAA will announce the at-large entries early next week.

Marshall added to her most recent achievement of being named the 2005 Mondo Mid-Atlantic Region Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, by earning a trip to the NCAA Championships in the long jump and advancing to the finals of the 100 meter hurdles. Marshall posted a winning mark of 21’ 2½” in the long jump and finished fourth in 100 meter hurdles in 13.45.

The 2005 BIG EAST and ECAC Outdoor Champion in the long jump, Marshall, previously received All-America honors for her fourth-place performance in the long jump at 2005 NCAA Indoor championships on March 11.

Segond will vie for his third All-America honors in the discus. The two-time All-American and school record-holder took third place in the men’s discus at the NCAA East Regionals with a mark of 196’ 10”. Segond did not automatically advance to the NCAA Championships in the shot put, as he finished ninth with toss of 56’ 8”. As the 20th-ranked shot putter in the nation, Segond has a solid chance of earning an at-large berth.

Allen, the 2005 BIG EAST and IC4A Champion in the long jump, will represent the Scarlet Knights at the 2005 NCAA Championships. The school record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor completed a successful jump of 24’ 9” to finish fifth and automatically advance for competition at the finals.

Seniors Amonica Phipps (Amherst, VA) and Dominique Sanon (Lawrenceville, NJ) advanced to the finals of the 800 meter run, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Phipps completed the event in 2:07.49, while Sanon followed closely behind in 2:07.98.

Other Scarlet Knight representatives included the women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Marshall, junior Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ) and sophomores Coryn Gomez (Somerset, NJ) and Ariel Brockman (Marlton, NJ). The relay team took 14th place in 46.30.

On the men’s side, senior David Klics (Lincoln Park, NJ) finished 13th in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.10.
