PISCATAWAY, NJ – Brian Duggan (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) and Nicholas Syzonenko (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) have signed National Letters of Intent to further their academic and athletic careers at Rutgers University as members of the men’s track team, head coach Mike Mulqueen announced today.
Duggan, the reigning National Scholastic Indoor Champion in the pole vault, recorded the second-best mark (16’ 2”) in the country. Duggan capped a successful senior campaign with pole vault championships at the Eastern States and Penn Relays.
“Brian comes in and fills a real void with the graduation of Dustin Runkle,” said Mulqueen. “Dustin was a consistent scorer in the BIG EAST and Brian post marks that can score in the BIG EAST and IC4A right away,” said Mulqueen. “In that event, we don’t really miss a beat.”
Syzonenko will participate in a number of events for the Scarlet Knights, competing in the high jump, long jump, triple jump and 400m dash. Syzonenko also finished second at the National Scholastic Championships in the high jump and took fourth place at the Eastern States Championships in the long jump.
“Nicholas has great high jump credentials and with the graduation of Greg Ostrowicki, he fills an immediate void,” said Mulqueen. “He is very versatile; he can also compete in the long jump and triple jump.
“Both guys come in and fill spots where we lose terrific athletes over the next two years,” said Mulqueen. “They are two guys that can make an immediate impact.”
