Scarlet Knights Stand In Fifth Heading Into Final Day of AAC Championships

    TAMPA, Fla. (May 3, 2014) –  Two Scarlet Knights will be bringing home American Athletic Conference outdoor track and field titles as sophomore Thomas Carr (Voorhees, N.J.) won the javelin and redshirt junior Corey Crawford (Oakland, N.J.) took first in the long jump on the second day of competition at the AAC Championships.

    Through the nine events scored, Rutgers stands in fifth place following day two action.  Louisville leads the competition with 75 points, followed by Memphis in second with 65 points and Houston in third with 53 points.  The Scarlet Knights have racked up 40 points including two individual event victories.

    Carr, last season’s Big East champion, gave Rutgers its first American title of the day in the javelin.  He wasted no time in establishing the top position on his first throw and won with a distance of  66.81m (219’ 2”).  Teammate and freshman Matthew Krezmer (Montoursville, Pa.) also added to RU’s point total with a fifth place distance of  60.90m (199’ 10”).

    Crawford, the AAC champion and national runner-up in the long jump during the indoor season, captured gold with a jump of 7.58m (24’ 10 ½”).  Sophomore Emeka Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) finished in eighth place going the distance of  6.90m (22’ 7 ¼”).

    In the high jump, RU had a trio of Scarlet Knights earning points.  Sophomore AJ Vance (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) led the way with a fourth place finish at a height of 2.00m (6” 6 ¾”), clearing the bar on his first attempt.  Crawford, who took on the high jump before his winning performance in the long jump, ended the afternoon in fifth, also at a height of 2. 00m (6” 6 ¾”). Sophomore Mike Stafford (Neptune, N.J.) also cleared 2.00m (6” 6 ¾”), tying for sixth.

    Additionally five Scarlet Knights advanced to finals racing on Sunday. Sophomore Rajee Dunbar (Arlington, Va.) will compete in the 200m finals, freshman Jermaine Griffith (Hamilton, N.J.) and junior D’Andre Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) qualified for the 400m finals and junior Chris DeFabio (Millington, N.J.) and senior Curtis Richburg (West Orange, N.J.) will race in the 1500m finals.

    The decathlon also wrapped up on Saturday.  Freshman Brennan Crowle (Endwell, N.Y.) finished the competition in seventh place with 6269 points.

    The American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships conclude on Sunday.
