TAMPA, Fla. (May 1, 2014) –  The Rutgers men’s track and field team will be one of eight teams competing for the 2014 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship title this weekend.

Rutgers has two Scarlet Knights currently at the top of the AAC standings heading into the championship weekend with redshirt junior Corey Crawford (Oakland, N.J.) topping the charts in the long jump and sophomore Thomas Carr (Voorhees, N.J.) leading the way in the javelin.

Crawford took second place in the long jump at the national championship meet during the indoor season and set the top jump in the conference last week at 7.90m (25’11”) to win the Penn Relays.  His jump at the Penn Relays currently places him fourth in the nation and third in the East Region.

Carr, who took home the Big East javelin title last season as a freshman, also leads the conference thanks to his performance at last week’s Penn Relays.  The sophomore took second in the javelin at a distance of 71.51m (234’ 7”) to set a new personal best, rank 13th nationally and 10th in the East Region.

Freshman Jermaine Griffith (Hamilton, N.J.) enters this weekend’s championship with the American’s third best finish in the 400m.  Griffith placed fourth at Georgia’s Spec Towns Invitational clocking in at a time of 47.39.

Both Griffith and Crawford were a part of the winning 4x400 relay team at Georgia’s Spec Towns Invitational that ranks Rutgers second in the event entering the championship.  Joined by junior D’Andre Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Rajee Dunbar (Arlington, Va.), the Scarlet Knights raced to a time of 3:10.36.

Sophomore AJ Vance (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and senior Chris Banafato (Bridgewater, N.J.) also enter the championship weekend with the fifth-best placements in the 5000m and high jump respectively.  Banafato helped RU to a second place finish at the Colonial Relays in early April with a time of 14:31.61 in the 5000m.  Vance, meanwhile, cleared a personal best 2.03m (6’ 8”) to take second at the USF Bulls Invitational to open up the outdoor season.

Following this weekend’s championship, the Rutgers men’s outdoor track and field team will return to action at the IC4A Championships held by Princeton May 16-18.
