Scarlet Knights Record Five IC4A Marks in First Outdoor Event of the 2014 Season

    TAMPA, Fla.  (March 21, 2014) –The Rutgers men’s track and field team kicked off the outdoor season at the Bulls Invitational with sophomores Alex Malveaux (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Kyle Holder (Randolph, N.J.) sweeping the hurdle events, sophomore Thomas Carr (Voorhees, N.J.) capturing the javelin title and the Scarlet Knights registering five IC4A qualifying marks.

    Malveaux took home the 110m hurdles title with a time of 15.96, while Holder won the 400m hurdles in crossing the finish line in 55.04.

    RU collected a pair of IC4A qualifying times in the 100m.  Sophomore Rajee Dunbar (Arlington, Va.) took third place and junior D’Andre Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed fourth as both Scarlet Knights finished in a time of 10.81.

    Rutgers also had second place finishes in the 800m and 1500m.  Senior Karon Purcell (East Windsor, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 800m in 1:55.20, just missing out on the top position by .08 seconds, while junior Chris DeFabio (Millington, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 1500m in a time of 4:01.27.

    In the field events, the Scarlet Knights went one-two in the javelin. Carr, last season’s BIG EAST champion in the event, won the title at a distance of 68.42m, a mark that was 2.58m further than last season’s championship performance.  He was followed by teammate Matthew Krezmer (Montoursville, Pa.) in second at 63.95m in his first outdoor event as a Scarlet Knight. Both distances were IC4A qualifying marks.

    Other notable field performances came from sophomore AJ Vance (Egg Harbor, N.J.) in the high jump, freshman Bryan Pearson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) in the discus and sophomore Emeka Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) in the triple jump.  Vance took second in the high jump at a height of 2.03m, a personal best, while Pearson was the runner-up in the discus at a distance of 50.16m for an IC4A qualifying mark.  Eze claimed third in the triple jump at 14.17m.

    The Rutgers men’s outdoor track and field team returns to action at the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond, Va. beginning on Friday, March. 28.
