PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 20, 2013) – Rutgers track & field’s Corey Crawford (Oakland, N.J.) was one of the 24 winners of the 2012-13 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognizes academic and athletic achievement, as well as community service, it was announced on Thursday by the conference office.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Crawford, a redshirt sophomore long jumper, was the men’s indoor track & field recipient of the award. Ranking 23rd among all Division I student-athletes at the end of the indoor season, Crawford won the IC4A indoor title and placed second at the BIG EAST Championships. Additionally, he was top finisher at the New Year’s Invitational held by Princeton and the Rutgers Tri-Meet.
During the indoor season, Crawford was named BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week twice. He first won the weekly conference award in December following his first place performance at the New Year’s Invitational with a mark of 7.60m, which at the time was the top mark in the country. He picked up his second BIG EAST weekly honor in February after take third at the New Balance Invitational with a jump of 7.61m, which ranked him ninth in the nation at the time.
