GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 23, 2013) – Senior James Plummer (Toms River, N.J.) has advanced to the 2013 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships in the discus after capturing the East Regional title and setting a new Rutgers school record at a distance of 61.27m (201’0”) at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

Plummer is one of 12 from the East Region to advance to the championships in Eugene, Ore. being held on June 5-8, 2013.  The senior Scarlet Knight captured the new RU benchmark on his third attempt in the preliminaries.

Plummer resets the record that was held by Sam Segond at 199’8.5” set at the Penn Relays in April of 2005.  Additionally, Plummer's previous career-best was 60.85m captured at the BIG EAST Tournament in early May.

The 2013 BIG EAST Championships’ Most Outstanding Field Performer and discus champion, Plummer entered this weekend’s competition ranked fifth in the country in the discus and second in the East Region.  Plummer also captured the IC4A title in the discus and was the top performer at the Penn Relays for the third time in his career.  He also captured the discus titles at the Georgia Spec Towns National Team Invitational and Fred Hardy Invitational, where he set a new meet and facility record.  During the outdoor season, Plummer was named BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week three times.  Plummer was making his fourth NCAA Regional appearance.

Senior Chris Wyckoff (Toms River, N.J.) just missed the cutoff for qualifying for the NCAA Championship in pole vault, but captured a new personal best.  With the top 12 advancing to Eugene, Ore., Wyckoff took 15th as he reached a final height of 5.20m, surpassing his previous best of 5.15m captured most recently at the IC4A Championships.

Also competing on Thursday was redshirt sophomore Corey Crawford (Oakland, N.J.), who finished in 19th in the long jump with the leap of 7.18m, and senior Monroe Kearns (Jackson, N.J), who took 41st in the 800m with a time of 1:53.37.

Still ahead for at the NCAA East Region Track & Field Championships for the Scarlet Knights are the javelin, triple jump and high jump.
