BRONX, N.Y. (February 19, 2012) – The Rutgers men’s track and field team secured a pair of event titles, including a record-setting performance in the 4x400-meter relay as the Scarlet Knights finished sixth at the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in the Bronx.
The Scarlet Knights collected 62 points in a field of 13 teams as Notre Dame won the event with 131 points, followed by Connecticut (103) in second and Pittsburgh (84.50) in third.
For the second-straight year, Rutgers took home victories in the 4x400-meter relay and triple jump. Steve Werner (Newtown Sq, Pa.), Kevin Brown (Woodbury, N.J.), Corey Caidenhead (Bergenfield, N.J.) and Aaron Younger (Franklinville, N.J.) combined to run a BIG EAST Indoor Championship record time of 3:10.20, breaking the previous conference mark which was set by RU at the 2007 championships.
Senior Adam Bergo (Plainfield, N.J.) added to his already impressive collegiate resume, winning the triple jump with a mark of 49’9.75”/15.18m. Freshman Sean Wimbush (Teaneck, N.J.) took fifth (48’4.75”/14.75) in the triple jump.
In the long jump, freshman Corey Crawford (Oakland, N.J.) placed second with a mark of 24’3”/7.39m, followed by Bergo who took third with a jump of 23’10”/7.26m.
Younger, Caidenhead and Brown also added to the team point total with individual performances on the track. Younger placed fourth in the 500-meter dash, running a time of 1:01.44, followed by Caidenhead who finished sixth with a time of 1:02.73. Brown took sixth in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 47.76.
The Scarlet Knights recorded a pair of eighth-place finishes, beginning with sophomore Karon Purcell (East Windsor, N.J.) who posted a time of 1:55.68 in the 800-meter run. The 4x800-meter relay group of Purcell, Monroe Kearns (Jackson, N.J.), Hamer Farag (Morristown, N.J.) and Curtis Richburg (West Orange, N.J.) clocked a time of 7:47.18.
In other action in the field events, junior Glenn Scheideler (Randolph, N.J.) finished fourth in the high jump, clearing a height of 6’9.75”/2.08. Junior Chris Wyckoff (Toms River, N.J.) took fifth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 15’9”/4.80m. Rounding out scoring was senior Michael Baird (Rockaway, N.J.) who placed seventh in the heptathlon with 4,897 points.
Rutgers will return to action on Saturday, March 3 for the 2012 IC4A Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass.
