BRONX, N.Y. (February 17, 2012) – The Rutgers men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Championship at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in the Bronx, N.Y. on Feb. 18-19.
Last year, the men’s team claimed titles in 500-meter dash, triple jump and 4X400-meter relay. RU finished with a combined score of 45, enough to finish eighth in a 12-team field. The women were able to improve their score from the previous year, placing 11 out of 16 schools.
Both teams have enjoyed success so far this season. The men picked up their second-straight team title at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships after winning the Navy Quad meet.
On track, Rutgers will look to former BIG EAST champion Aaron Younger (Franklinville, N.J.) on the 500m, where he currently ranks No. 4 in the conference, and the 4X400m relay team, which has the third-best time.
In the field events, Adam Bergo (Plainfield, N.J.), who has the best triple jump performance in the conference, will look to claim another BIG EAST title, as will Corey Crawford (Oakland, N.J.) who is second in long jump.
On the women’s side, the Scarlet Knights had nine top-three performances and finished third overall in the Metropolitan Indoor Championship. RU recently set school records in the 1,000-meter run and the 4x400m relay.
The 4x400m relay currently ranks third in the BIG EAST, while in the field events, Rutgers will look to Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) who is No. 2 in the triple jump and No. 3 in the long jump.
