PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 23, 2011) – The Rutgers men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete at the 2011 NCAA East Regional beginning on Thursday, May 26, at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind.
On the men’s side, the Scarlet Knights will participate in two track events and three field events, while the women’s team will have two competitors in field events. Last season, the men’s team sent a school record seven competitors to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Junior James Plummer (South Toms River, N.J.) highlights a list of standout competitors for the men’s squad. Plummer has remained undefeated in the discus this season, winning titles at the Penn Relays, and both the BIG EAST and IC4A Outdoor Championships. Plummer is making his second appearance at the East Regional and currently has the fourth-best mark nationally in the discus.
Plummer will be joined in the field events by four-time NCAA East Regional qualifier senior Jeremy Pennino (Watchung, N.J.) and junior Adam Bergo (Plainfield, N.J.), who is making his third trip to the regional. Pennino will compete in the javelin and look duplicate his performance from a year ago when he advanced to the NCAA Championship.
In the track events, senior Aaron Younger (Franklinville, N.J.) will make his second appearance at the East Regional after qualifying for the NCAA Championship last season in the 400-meter hurdles. Younger will also join senior Kevin Brown (Woodbury, N.J.), junior Steve Werner (Newtown Sq, Pa.) and freshman Corey Caidenhead (Bergenfield, N.J.) on the 4x400-meter relay team. The group, which advanced to the NCAA Championship in 2010, has been solid all year, winning both the indoor and outdoor BIG EAST Championships.
Representing the women’s team will be senior Natalie Clickett (Union City, Pa.) in the discus and junior Alex Kelly (Florham Park, N.J.) in the javelin. Clickett and Kelly are each making their third trip to the East Regional.
