ITHACA, NY – The tandem of Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Lauren Edelstein (Medford Lakes, NJ) won the Flight B doubles consolation title for Rutgers at the season-opening Cornell Invitational. Balasa and Edelstein defeated Ashley Donahue and Lindsey Murasko-Blank, 8-1, in the final match.
In Flight B singles, Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) won two matches in straight sets before being defeated in the semifinals. Also in flight B, Edelstein won her first-round match in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 10-6).
Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) earned a first-round bye in Flight C singles and won her second-round match, 2-6, 6-3, 11-9. She was defeated in the semifinals. Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) won a first round match before losing in the quarterfinals.
The Flight A doubles team of Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and Shmakova won their first match, 8-5, but lost in the quarterfinals.
