PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s tennis team opened its fall schedule at the Cornell Invitational on Saturday. Play continues tomorrow with the championship semifinals and consolation finals.
In Flight A singles, RU’s Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) lost her first match, 1-6, 2-6 and lost in the consolation semifinals, 1-6, 1-6. Andrea Wecksetin won a three set decision in the first round (7-6, 6-7, 10-4) before losing in the quarterfinals.
In Flight B singles, Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) won a pair of straight set decisions (6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0) to advance to the semifinals. In the same flight, Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) made her college debut with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 win. She lost to Melissa Tu of Cornell in the semifinals.
Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) won her quarterfinal match in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 11-9) and advanced to the semifinals of Flight C singles. Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) lost in the quarterfinals after posting a 6-1, 6-0 win in the first round.
In Flight B doubles, RU’s Balasa and Edelstein advanced to the finals with a 9-7 win. They will play for the championship tomorrow morning.
