MORGANTOWN, WV - The Rutgers women’s tennis team registered its fourth-straight victory on Saturday at the West Virginia Tennis Courts in Morgantown, WV. The Scarlet Knights earned a 4-0 victory in a shortened match, improving their record to 10-6 overall for the season with a 6-2 mark in BIG EAST play.
RU opened up a one-point advantage after the three doubles matches were completed, taking two of the three matches. Sophomore Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and senior Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) downed Jill Williams and Laura Pegula of Pitt, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 spot saw senior Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) and freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) fall to Nikki Borza and Hayley Hughes, 8-4. Rutgers clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 3 doubles. Freshmen Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) beat Emily Hughes and Jena Fiore, 8-2.
The match was completed after Rutgers earned the decisive fourth point to take the match victory. Weckstein downed Williams, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Sommerlad beat Borza, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. No. 3 singles saw Hellier defeat Pegula, 7-5, 6-0. Matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles were not finished, while the No. 6 singles match was not played, after Rutgers earned the team victory.
The Scarlet Knights return home to host Seton Hall on Wednesday, April 9, at 2 p.m.
