RU Women’s Tennis Earns Second Win of Spring Break

  • MIAMI, FL -- The Rutgers women’s tennis recorded its sixth win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Colgate, 6-1, on the tennis courts of the University of Miami. The Scarlet Knights won all three doubles matches while taking five of six singles bouts en route to the team victory.

    The No. 1 doubles tandem of Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) defeated Lauren Erikson and Sheila Rao, 8-3. No. 2 doubles saw Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) down Colgate’s Tasha Eno and Marissa Alikpala in a shortened match, 6-4, while Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) and Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) beat Jamie Maldow and Lindsay Suffredini, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.

    In singles play, Weckstein downed Alikpala, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. Sommerlad defeated Erikson at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Hellier knocked off Eno, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. The No. 4 position saw Balasa record her team-high eighth win of the year, beating Maldow, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Link won at No. 5 singles, overpowering Colgate’s Jessica Fede, 6-2, 4-6, 5-4 (7-3). RU’s lone loss came at the No. 6 spot as Markowitz fell to Rao in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 5-4 (7-6).

    The Scarlet Knights will wrap up their spring break trip in south Florida with a match against Lafayette on Thursday at 9 a.m. in Boca Raton, FL.
