  • MILWAUKEE, WI - The Rutgers women’s tennis team (3-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) rebounded from a loss to conference newcomer DePaul on Saturday to register an exciting 4-3 victory over Marquette on Sunday, finishing its Midwest roadtrip with a 1-1 record.

The Scarlet Knights were able to get off on a strong note against the Golden Eagles by winning two of three doubles matches, keyed by 8-5 wins from Alina Balasa/Dana Gordon and Anela Dujsic/ Polina Zaretser.

In the singles matches, Lauren Edelschein picked up RU’s second team point with a straight set win at sixth singles, but it was a pair of three-set victories that clinched the match for the Scarlet Knights.  Katrina Elder-Bush outlasted Maria Calbeto at first singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Ketevan Shmakova recovered after losing the first set to post a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles.

“This was a significant win for us to travel halfway across the country and have everyone contribute,” said head coach Ben Bucca.  “The match could have gone either way, but it shows a lot about our will win and succeed that we found a way to pull it out.”

Against DePaul, Dujsic was RU’s lone winner at fourth singles, knocking off Anja Mihaldinec 2-6, 7-6 and 10-5 in the match breaker.

Rutgers returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24, when it hosts Quinnipiac at 3:00 p.m.
