  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women’s tennis team (2-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened its 2003 home slate on Sunday, defeating Connecticut, 6-1, inside the Rutgers Tennis Center. After sweeping all three doubles matches, RU took five of six singles bouts to win convincingly, notching its first BIG EAST win of the season.

    Junior Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) won her first match of the season at No. 1 singles, downing Connecticut’s Whitney Simcik in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Senior co-captain Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) defeated Trinell Russell, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. No. 3 singles saw senior co-captain Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) beat Barbara Schumsky, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) earned her second win of the season at the No. 4 position, downing Jennifer LoRusso, 6-3, 6-0. Junior Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) defeated Colleen Connors, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.

    Connecticut’s lone point in the match came at No. 6 singles where UConn’s April Dixon defeated sophomore Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY), 6-4, 6-3.

    For the second straight match, the Scarlet Knights won all three doubles competitions. At No. 1, Weckstein and Sommerlad beat Simcik and Russell, 8-4. Hellier and Shmakova picked up their second victory at the No. 2 spot, downing Connors and Dixon, 8-3. The third doubles position saw Link and Balasa earn an 8-5 win over Schumsky and LoRusso.

    The women will take a break from conference play, returning to action next Saturday, facing Air Force at West Point, NY at 2 p.m.
