VILLANOVA, PA – The Rutgers women’s tennis team (9-9, 4-2 BIG EAST) continued its late-season surge, knocking off Villanova, 6-1, on Saturday in Villanova, PA.
The Scarlet Knights have now won four of its past five matches, and were aided on Saturday by the play of their doubles teams, which each notched convincing victories. Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) and Keteven Shamkova (Dover, NJ) won 8-4 at first doubles, followed by a 8-1 triumph from Alina Balsa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario). Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) and Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) finished off the sweep with a win at third doubles.
In singles action, Elder-Bush notched a three-set win, topping Candice Carlin, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. Dujsic won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1), as did Magomedova, Shamkova and Edelschein. The trio combined to lose just eight games in their victories.
“We’re playing out best tennis of the year,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “It couldn’t have come at a better time. We have a big match tomorrow [against Georgetown], so hopefully this momentum carries over.”
Rutgers returns to action tomorrow, April 10, when it faces travels to Washington, DC, to face Georgetown at 1:00 p.m.
