  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s tennis team rolled to its fourth-straight win, defeating BIG EAST foe Villanova, 7-0, Thursday afternoon in Piscataway. The Scarlet Knights improve to 12-7 overall and 6-3 in the BIG EAST.

Once again, Rutgers swept the doubles matches, as Andrea Weckstein and Ketevan Shmakova were victorious at first doubles, 9-7. Kaitlin Link and Jill Markowitz followed with a 8-6 win at second doubles while Helen Magomedova and Lauren Edelschein won at third doubles, 8-3, improving to 9-1 this season. The Scarlet Knights are 15-4 this season when they win the team doubles point.

In singles, six of the seven matches were contested in straight sets. Weckstein won at first singles, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, and Shmakova (second singles), Alina Balasa (third singles), Markowitz (fourth singles), Magomedova (fifth singles) and Edelschein (sixth singles) earned straight-set wins. For Edelschein, it was her fourth straight singles win.

“This team is peaking at the right time,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “The girls compete hard, and are playing their best tennis at the right time of the year. I think the entire community would be proud of the way they have represented themselves and the university this season.”
