PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 6, 2014) – Senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and junior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) of the Rutgers women’s tennis team participated in the 2014 James E. Cryan Memorial Tournament from July 26 – Aug. 2, capturing the title in Women’s Open Doubles.
The Cryan Memorial Tournament, established in 1965, honors Mr. Cryan for his contributions to the sport of tennis in the Trenton, N.J. area prior to his death from Hodgkins Disease. The prestigious event remains rooted in New Jersey, taking place at Mercer County Park in West Windsor Township, N.J. Competitors include top former and current collegiate tennis players.
“My teammate Gina and I decided to play the Cryan Tournament in order to get in shape for the upcoming season,” said Balsamo. “This will be our first year competing in the Big Ten Conference. We got to play some great matches against strong competitors and we had a lot of fun with it.”
Balsamo and Li competed as doubles partners and advanced to the final round. The two faced off with doubles-pair Alexis Dorr, former Iowa player, and Jacqueline Wong, former Penn player. The RU pair defeated their competition 7-6 (5), 6-1, 1-0 (2) to take home the title.
The women’s doubles champions are not the only Scarlet Knights putting in work throughout the offseason. Incoming freshman, Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.), participated in the ITA Summer Circuit Tournament hosted at Rutgers from July 19 – 21. She notched a second-place finish in the event. Lee is currently ranked No. 79 nationally according to tennisrecruiting.net.
Li also had a strong performance at the ITA Tournament, advancing to the semifinals.
“We are very excited to see that the girls are playing well. Lindsay and Gina brought in a good win at the Cryan Tournament,” said assistant coach Hilary Ritchie. “Incoming freshman Chloe Lee has also been participating in various tournaments. We feel they are ready for the fall.”
The Scarlet Knights will focus on the added experience to help guide them through their inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.
