PISCATAWAY, NJ – The St. John’s Red Storm used a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles for the deciding team points as Rutgers (5-4) dropped a 4-3 decision to the SJU on Sunday, March 7, at the Rutgers Tennis Bubble.
RU was able to earn the team doubles point by winning at first and third doubles, respectively. Andrea Weckstein and Ketevan Shmakova rolled to a 8-2 win at first doubles while Helen Magomedova and Lauren Edelschein eked out a 9-8 win at third doubles.
In singles, St. John’s took a 2-1 lead with straight-set victories and first and second singles, respectively. Shmakova tied the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles, and Markowitz won at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1. Victories by the Red Storm at fourth and sixth singles, however, clinched the match.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, March 10, when it makes the short trip to Easton, PA, to face Lafayette.
