  • EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (April 11, 2014) – The Rutgers tennis team (14-4, 3-1 AAC) put forth a tremendous performance to capture its sixth-straight win, blanking Villanova (3-12, 0-2 BIG EAST), 7-0, at the East Brunswick Racquet Club Friday evening. The victory is Rutgers 11th in its last 12 matches.

“We sensed going into this match that if we played a strong game of tennis we would come out victorious, and we came out and played determined and disciplined,” said head coach Ben Bucca, Jr. ‘We had a convincing win and are really playing confidently right now. We’re very excited about our match this Sunday against a good St. John’s team. We look forward to a tough match, as well as honoring our two seniors, Vanessa Petrini and Stef Balasa, who have had outstanding careers here at Rutgers.”

RU opened the day with convincing wins in doubles play, allowing just five total Wildcat points between all three matches.

In the No. 1 match, senior co-captain Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) defeated Mikelle Mancini and Tori Smyth, 8-1. Sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) followed and secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Kate Pettee and Linley Busby at No. 2.

In the final doubles match, junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and sophomore Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) teamed up to down Connor Brewer and Samantha Schafer, 8-1.

Rutgers carried the momentum into singles play, as Petrini again met Mancini at the No. 1 slot in solo action, with the Scarlet Knights coming out victorious, 6-2, 6-3. Li followed at No. 2 with identical winning scores of 6-1, 6-1 over Pettee.

Kayati picked up her team-leading 14th singles win at No. 3, defeating Busby, 6-2, 6-3. Senior co-captain Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.), who is second on the team with 13 wins, captured a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Brewer, while Balsamo topped Hayley Sanzone, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.

Zein finished off the sweep at No. 6, blanking Anne Cognetti, 6-0, 6-0.

Rutgers concludes the regular season on Sunday, April 13, as the squad welcomes St. John’s “To the Banks.” Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
