PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 6, 2014) – The Rutgers tennis team will participate in its first full weekend of play starting Friday, Feb. 7, as the team hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m. at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. RU will then travel to Philadelphia, Pa., on Sunday, Feb. 9 to take on the Quakers of UPenn at 2 p.m.
Rutgers (1-0) enters Friday’s match after picking up a 7-0 win over Lehigh to start 2014. The Scarlet Knights opened the day by securing the doubles point after sweeping all three doubles matches and went on to sweep singles play as well.
FDU also enters the match with a perfect 1-0 record after winning its season-opener against NJIT, 5-2, on Feb. 1. The Knights trailed, 0-1, after dropping the doubles point, but managed to rally back and outscore the Highlanders by a 5-1 margin for the victory.
RU’s match against the Knights was originally slated for 2 p.m., but will now begin at 1 p.m.
The Quakers (0-2) will play host to the Akron Zips on Friday before welcoming the Scarlet Knights two days later. Penn, which is in the midst of a season-opening five-match homestand, has dropped its first two matches to Old Dominion and Maryland. The Quakers also had one match against Drexel postponed to a later date.
Penn is led by junior Sol Eskenazi and freshman Kana Daniel, who are each 2-0 in singles competition. The tandem is also partners in doubles play.
Rutgers’ match against Penn marks the first of six straight games the squad will play on the road. Head coach Ben Bucca, Jr. and Co. will not return home until Friday, March 7, when the team hosts Binghamton at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
