  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 3, 2014) – The Rutgers tennis team opens the 2014 campaign at Lehigh on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The action begins at 3 p.m. at the Lewis Tennis Center.

Last year, RU completed the season with a 14-9 overall record. The Scarlet Knights finished BIG EAST play with an impressive 7-2 record, before going 1-2 in the conference championships. Rutgers defeated St. John’s in the opening round of the tournament before dropping to third-seeded Louisville in the second round. The team went on to fall to Marquette in the consolation match.

The Scarlet Knights return six letterwinners from a year ago and also welcome the addition of a lone freshman. Highlighting the slew of returners for the Scarlet Knights are senior co-captains Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.). Also returning is last year’s Most Valuable Player, sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.), who compiled a team-best 16-5 record at No. 2 singles. Li also enjoyed success in doubles play, leading the team in doubles victories with a 12-7 mark.

Lehigh enters the contest with a 1-1 record, most recently defeating Saint Francis (PA) by a score of 5-2 on Feb. 2. The Mountain Hawks opened the season on Jan. 19 against Drexel and fell 5-2. Tuesday’s match against Rutgers will be Lehigh’s third of an 11-match season opening homestand. The Hawks hit the road for their first contest away from the confines of the Lewis Tennis Center on March 23 at Saint Joseph’s.

RU hosts its first home match of the season on Friday, Feb. 7 as it welcomes the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson to the East Brunswick Racquet Club at 2 p.m.
