SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse women’s tennis team won two doubles matches and the first three singles matches to earn a 4-3 victory over Rutgers in the BIG EAST opener for both teams Saturday in Syracuse. The Scarlet Knights fall to 2-1, 0-1.
Syracuse took two of three doubles matches to earn a critical point. Rutgers’ Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) and Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) was awarded a victory by injury default at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) lost 8-2 and at No. 1 doubles, senior Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) fell 8-3.
Magomedova, Link and Jill Markowitz were RU’s singles winners, but Syracuse victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. SU pulled even at No. 3 singles and the Orange went up, 3-2, with a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles. With the team victory on the line, SU’s Trine Lise Juliussen defeated Wechstein in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 to seal the win.
Rutgers has a chance to rebound from its first loss of the season tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 15, when it faces SUNY-Binghamton at 8:30 a.m.
