PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 16, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team will travel to Harvard on Thursday, Oct. 11 to conclude the 2013 fall campaign at the ITA Regional Championships. Four Scarlet Knights were selected to compete in singles play – the most singles players who have ever qualified for the tournament in program history. Two doubles teams will also make the trip.
Senior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.), junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and sophomores Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) all qualified for the singles draw. Additionally, the duos of Petrini/Balsamo and Li/Zein will represent Rutgers in doubles play.
“This has been a great fall season for the ladies on the team,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “They’ve had great weeks of practice and strong competition so we are prone to play well at the regionals.”
Hosted by Harvard University, competition is set to begin Thursday evening at 5 p.m. Last year, the Scarlet Knights sent seven of the eight players on the team to the regional event.
Rutgers most recently participated at the USTA Invitational last week. Both Petrini and Li advanced to the main draw semifinals of their respective singles flights to highlight an overall strong showing by the Scarlet Knights. The team won 13 of its 21 matches over the three-day tournament.
