  • FLUSHING, N.Y. (October 13, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team completed its second competition of the 2013-14 fall season Sunday afternoon at the United States Tennis Association Invitational. The three-day tournament was held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis, home of the U.S. Open. Senior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) posted noteworthy performances, advancing to the main draw semifinals of their respective singles flights.

“We won the majority of our matches (13 of 21) in a very competitive tournament,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “Our performances over the weekend speak well to both the high level of play of the team and the caliber of the tournament. We are now preparing to complete our last official week of our fall campaign on a strong note at the regional tournament.”

Petrini would just miss a finals appearance in the “A” Singles Flight, after dropping a 6-3, 6-0 decision to the #1 seed, Liang Spencer of Harvard. Petrini picked up wins over Dorothy Safron of the University of Delaware (6-4, 6-2)  and Chloe Sher of Seton Hall (6-1, 6-2) before suffering her first defeat of the tournament to Spencer, who went on to win the finals championship match.

Li would also notch her only loss of the tournament in the semifinals match of her draw, the “B” Singles Flight. Li dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to eventual finals winner, Monica Lin of Harvard. Li battled to a first-round victory over Astrid Gehre of UTA, that needed a tiebreaker set to determine the victory. The Garden State native blanked Gehre, 6-0, in the first set before dropping a hard-fought 5-7 decision in the second. The second-year Scarlet Knight ultimately captured an 11-9 victory in the tiebreaker to win the match. Li went on to defeat Emma Alderman of UConn in the quarterfinals by scores of 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles play, the tandem of Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) advanced to the semifinals of the “3” Doubles Flight, but were edged by Sylvia H. Li/Hannah Morrill of Harvard by a score of 8-6. Kayati/Cunningham captured an 8-4 win over Khrystyna Pavlyuk/Puck Vlaskamp of St. John’s in the first round prior to competing in the semifinals.

Rutgers concludes its fall season at the ITA Regionals beginning on Thursday, Oct. 17 in Boston, Mass.
