PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 10, 2013) – The Rutgers tennis team opens the 2013 fall schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against NJIT at the Rutgers Tennis Complex.
RU welcomes the Highlanders “To The Banks” on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. match. Last year, head coach Benjamin Bucca also led the squad against the in-state rival in a scrimmage to open the 2012 slate. Scores were not kept and the exhibition was geared towards individual play, with singles and doubles matches taking place between the two squads.
Rutgers returns seven letterwinners from last year’s campaign and added freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) to the roster. Leading the core of returners is sophomore Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.), who was named the MVP for the 2013 season and concluded her rookie season with a team-best 16-5 record, including a 9-1 mark in league play at her No. 2 singles position. Three other Scarlet Knights recorded 10 or more wins on the 2013 season, including Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) with 13, Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) with 11 and Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) with 10.
The Scarlet Knights finished the 2013 schedule with a 14-9 overall record and an 8-4 mark in BIG EAST action. The Scarlet Knights came in fifth in the conference championships after winning their first round match against local metropolitan rival, St. John’s University.
Following the NJIT match, Rutgers returns to action on Sept. 20th, as it heads to the Brown Invitational to face Boston College, Boston University and Binghamton University in the three-day tournament.
