BETHLEHAM, PA – The Rutgers women’s tennis team (1-0) won all three doubles matches and took four singles contests as it defeated Lehigh, 5-2, in the season-opener for both teams on Friday, Feb. 6.
At first doubles, Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) won a 8-5 decision to get Rutgers started on the right foot. Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) followed that up with a 8-3 win at second doubles to give RU the team doubles point. At third doubles, Jill Markowitz Forest Hills, NY) and Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) earned a 8-5 victory.
Wecksetin and Balasa dropped matches at first and second singles, respectively, but Shmakova got Rutgers back on track with a hard-fought three set win at third singles (6-3, 2-6, 7-5). Magomedova clinches the win for the Scarlet Knights by cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fourth singles. Markowitz and Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) rounded out the singles matches with straight-set victories.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 10, when it hosts Fordham at the RU Tennis Complex at 2:30 p.m.
