PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 7, 2013) – In a BIG EAST matchup, the Rutgers women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Syracuse at the RU Tennis Complex, Sunday. Freshman Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) notched the point for the Scarlet Knights in the No. 5 singles match.

“Overall, the team fought hard today,” said assistant coach Hilary Ritchie. “We had some close matches, but unfortunately Syracuse had the edge today.”

Led by 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca, Rutgers fell to 11-7, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. The Orange improved to 10-7 (6-1 BIG EAST).

After dropping the doubles point, Zein highlighted the Scarlet Knights’ day. The freshman earned a hard-fought victory over Syracuse’s Brittany Lashway, defeating Lashway in a tie-breaker set (6-2, 4-6, 11-9).

The Scarlet Knights are back in action against league-opponent Seton Hall at the RU Tennis Complex on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m.
