  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 18, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team picked up a dominant 8-1 win over No. 17 (Div. II) Nova Southeastern, 8-1, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Monday. The Scarlet Knights won every match in singles play and two out of three doubles matches.

Division II programs use a scoring format that awards one point for each match, including doubles play.

RU, led by 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca, improved to 8-5 on the season. The Sharks fell to 5-7 in 2013.

The Scarlet Knights started strong in doubles competition as junior Vanessa Petrini (Samford, Conn.) and Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) notched an 8-5 victory over Sabrina Kierberg and Austin Lavalli of Nova. The two improved to 8-2 as partners in 2013.

After dropping the No. 2 singles contest, sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and junior Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) posted a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Carlee Rizzolo and Linda Kornienko to give RU a 2-1 lead.

In No. 1 singles play, Petrini picked up her eighth win of the season, downing Kierberg (6-0, 6-2). Li followed that up with a 6-0, 6-4 defeated over the Sharks’ Alexandra Johansson. The decision gave Li her team-best 10th win of the campaign.

The Scarlet Knights closed out the match with four-straight doubles wins by freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.), Balasa, freshman Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) and sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.). Rutgers didn’t drop a single set in singles play.

Rutgers finishes its Florida trip by taking on California University of Pennsylvania at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, in Miami Shores, Fla.
