Rutgers Tennis Treks to Florida for Three Contests
Scarlet Knights to play Barry, Nova Southeastern and Cal U (Pa.)

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 15, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team is scheduled to travel to Florida to participate in three matches from March 17-20. The Scarlet Knights start by taking on Barry University on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. in Miami Shores, Fla. The squad then heads to Boca Raton to face Nova Southeastern on March 18 at 1 p.m., before trekking back to Miami Shores to meet California (Pa.) on March 20 at 10 a.m.

    The Scarlet Knights are 7-4 in 2013, with a 3-1 record in BIG EAST play. Led by 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca, Rutgers is coming off a 4-3 win at home against Houston on March 13.

    In doubles play, junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) have led the squad, posting a 7-2 record as a tandem this season. Li leads the team in wins, holding a 9-2 record in singles competition, followed by classmate Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.), who owns an 8-2 record in 2013.

    A member of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC), Barry University is undefeated this season with a 14-0 record. The Buccaneers are ranked No. 4 in the latest Division II ITA rankings (Feb. 27). Fifth-year coach Avi Kigel is at the helm.

    Nova Southeastern, also a member of the SSC, is ranked No. 17 in Division II as of Feb. 27. The Sharks are coming off a 5-2 loss to BIG EAST opponent Georgetown on March 8. Leading Nova Southeastern is 10th-year head coach Michael Coleman.

    Cal U, part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, also holds a 5-6 record this season and is ranked No. 9 in the most recent Division II ITA rankings. The Vulcans have two common opponents as the Scarlet Knights in Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Cal U lost to the Mountaineers (March 8), 7-0, and beat Pittsburgh (March 3), 4-3.
