  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 13, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis returned home and picked up a hard-fought victory over Houston, 4-3, at the East Brunswick Racquet Club, Wednesday. The doubles point proved to be the difference in the match.

“This was a thrilling victory against a talented and well-coached University of Houston team,” said 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca. “It was great for Rutgers to come back from a disappointing weekend and play at a high level and have such a thrilling victory. Congratulations to all of the ladies on the team for a spirited victory today.”

RU improved to 7-4 while the Cougars fell to 10-5.

In doubles play, junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) continued their strong play, downing Rocio Martin Fernandez and Charlotte Phillips of the Cougars in first singles, 8-6. The two improved to 7-2 while playing together in 2013.

The Scarlet Knights secured the point as freshmen Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) took down Houston’s Jo Garvey and Elena Kordolaimi, 8-7, and then sealed the contest in the tiebreaker, 7-5.

Li started Rutgers off in No. 2 singles competition by improving to a team-best 9-2 this season. She earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Celia Fraser. In the following match, Kayati continued her strong play by winning her eighth contest of the season by defeating Martin-Fernandez (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). The Scarlet Knights’ final point came in No. 6 singles play, as sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) downed Garvey, 6-2, 6-2.

Rutgers next takes on Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla., on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m.
