Rutgers Tennis Sweeps Army, 7-0
Scarlet Knights notch second shutout of the season

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 22, 2013) – For the second time this season, the Rutgers women’s tennis team shutout its opponent, downing Army, 7-0 in West Point, N.Y., Friday. The Scarlet Knights did not drop a match in singles or doubles play to win its second-straight contest.

    “This was a fantastic match,” said 10th-year head coach Ben Bucca. “Both teams were on top of their game with some outstanding shot-making. Congratulations to Army for a hard-fought match, but we are thrilled with our performance today and the display of a very strong competitive spirit.”

    RU improved to 4-2 while Army moved to 5-2 overall. Four of the six singles play matchups went to three sets.

    Junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) started the Scarlet Knights off in the No. 1 singles spot with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Army’s Erin Colton. Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) then downed Black Knight Jamila Paul (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) to put RU up 2-0. Petrini and Li each improved to 5-1 on the season.

    Two matches later, freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) won hard-fought contest over Carolyn Pitman of Army. The players split the opening two sets (6-2, 3-6) before going to 7-6 in the third set. In final set tiebreaker, Kayati pulled out a 7-2 victory to secure the match.

    In No. 5 singles play, sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) earned 6-1, 6-3 victory over Della Taylor.

    The Scarlet Knights then continued their strong play, winning all three of the doubles contests. The Tandem of Petrini and Li improved to 3-1 on the season with a win over Army’s Della Taylor and Elle Taylor (8-6).

    Rutgers next continues BIG EAST play at home taking on Marquette at 1 p.m. Friday, March 1.
