PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 13, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team notched a 5-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Atlantic Club in Manasquan, N.J., Wednesday. The Scarlet Knights won four of the six singles contests to seal the match before grabbing the doubles point with victories in two of the three matchups.
RU improved to 2-1 while FDU dropped its first match of the spring season.
Junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) started the Scarlet Knights off by downing Anna Rapoport of the Knights, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Egzona Morina.
After dropping the third and fourth singles matches, sophomores Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and Satreethai Sasinin (New Brunswick, N.J.) sealed the victory for Rutgers. Balsamo defeated Manuela Leme (6-4, 6-1) before Sasinin beat Gabriela Sarrate (6-3, 6-0) in her first match of the season.
In doubles competition, Petrini and Li notched a 9-7 win over Morina and Celine Maier of FDU, while the tandem of Balsamo and Sasinin closed it out with a dominating 8-1 defeat of Leme and Sarrate.
Petrini and Li each improved to 3-0 in singles play and are now 2-0 while playing together in doubles competition.
The Scarlet Knights next take on Princeton in Princeton, N.J., on Saturday, Feb. 16 at noon.
