PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 7, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s tennis team picked up a 7-0 win over Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa., in its second match of the 2013 campaign, Thursday. The Scarlet Knights won all six singles contests and all three doubles matches.
“It’s great to get in the win column,” said 10th-year head coach Ben Bucca. “It gives us a lot of confidence. We should have a very competitive match with Penn on Saturday.”
Rutgers improved to 1-1 overall, while the Mountain Hawks dropped to 1-3 to start the season.
The highlight of the match was sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) recording a victory in a tie-breaker set, defeating her sixth singles opponent Jill Sloand (3-6, 6-0, 11-9) to earn the point. In No. 1 singles competition, junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) started the Scarlet Knights off with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Jenai Bilimoria of Lehigh.
Freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) was also impressive, blanking Molly Brooks in the fifth singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Kayati and Petrini are both 2-0 on the season, along with freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.). Rutgers led 6-0 heading into doubles play and proceeded to win all three matches, starting with the tandem of Petrini and Li tallying an 8-6 victory over Bilimoria and Abby Farrell of the Mountain Hawks.
Rutgers continues play at Penn on Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon in Philadelphia, Pa. The Quakers hold a 2-0 record in 2013.
