  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2012) – Members of the Rutgers women’s tennis team will compete at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships from Oct. 19-23 in West Point, N.Y. The tournament, hosted by Army at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, features the top players in a region that includes 46 Division I teams and is the last fall competition for the Scarlet Knights.

    Information and Results

“We’ve worked very hard this fall and due to strong work ethic, we’re playing our best tennis right when we should be leading into the ITA Regional Championships,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “It’s fantastic to have so many players on the team participating. We look forward to Rutgers women’s tennis making a strong statement at the tournament.”

Seven of the squad’s eight players were invited the tournament, the most ever in Bucca’s 10 seasons at Rutgers. The single-elimination tournament will be flighted, with results being generated from draws of individual singles and doubles tournaments rather than a team score.

The four players competing in the main singles draw, beginning Saturday, are juniors Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.), as well as freshmen Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas). Petrini advanced the semifinals last season at the ITA Regional.

In doubles competition, three Rutgers tandems will compete in the main draw starting on Friday. The pairs consist of Balasa and Petrini, sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and Zein, and sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) and freshman Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.).

The Scarlet Knights are coming off of a strong showing at the USTA Invitational, where Zein won her singles draw and Judeh and Kayati advanced to the finals in their respective draw.
