PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 20, 2012) – The Rutgers tennis team is scheduled to compete in its second fall competition, traveling to the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I. The three-day tournament is set to begin on Friday, Sept. 21.
The Scarlet Knights will be one of six teams participating in the tournament, including Binghamton, Boston College, Boston University, Brown and Providence. The tournament features top teams from the region, including Boston College and Brown, who finished No. 4 and No. 7 respectively in the final Northeast rankings from last season. Rutgers concluded the year at No. 9.
“These are some of the top teams on the east coast,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “We have been working really hard for the competition this weekend. We are excited to go out and compete.”
The Brown Invitational will be flighted, with results being generated from rounds of individual singles and doubles tournaments rather than a team score.
Rutgers began its fall season hosting NJIT in a scrimmage on Sept. 12. The Scarlet Knights compiled 13 wins last spring and earned a spot in the BIG EAST Championships. The team is led by juniors Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.), who went 13-9 and 13-8 in singles play last season.
The squad also includes sophomores Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.), Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) and Satreethai Sasinin (New Brunswick, N.J.). Bucca brought in the 28th-ranked recruiting class nationally according to Tennis Recruiting Network’s 2012 Winter Rankings, which included Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.), Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas).
