PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 13, 2012) –Incoming Rutgers tennis signees Gina Li and Mariam Zein were honored as 2012 National High School Tennis All-Americans by the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation (NHSTAAF). The two joined 35 other girls who were named to the annual list, which began in 2000.
“This is a great distinction for both Gina and Mariam, individually as well as for Rutgers,” said head coach Benjamin Bucca. “They should be congratulated for their outstanding play on their high school tennis teams.”
A Hillsborough, N.J., native, Li is a five-star recruit according to the Tennis Recruiting Network. Li was ranked No. 59 in the nation and No. 2 in New Jersey as a senior in 2011. During that season, she compiled a 24-1 singles record. The Somerset County singles champion was named First Team All-County, First Team All-Group IV and Second Team All-State. She was 79-12-2 in singles matches at Hillsborough.
Zein, also a five-star recruit according to the Tennis Recruiting Network, hails from Sugarland, Texas. As a senior at Dulles High School, Zein was ranked No. 79 nationally and No. 7 in the state of Texas. In May, she won the Texas 5A girls singles title.
The NHSTAAF is a non-profit corporation that aims to promote high school tennis and recognize outstanding players and teams throughout the country. For a student-athlete to be eligible to be named an All-American, the individual must maintain an above-average academic and citizenship record, compete on a high school tennis team and have an individual national ranking.
