PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 27, 2012) – Sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) has been named to the All-BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Team, the conference announced late Thursday. She finished the season with a 13-8 mark in singles and a 15-6 record in doubles to help the Scarlet Knights to 13 team wins during the season.
“This is a strong tribute to the great season that Vanessa Petrini had,” said ninth-year head coach Benjamin Bucca. “She worked very hard on her game and it showed with her improved play throughout the year. It is a great honor for her and for Rutgers tennis, as it is the fifth-straight year we have had a player earn distinction from the conference.”
Petrini started off the season playing at the third spot in the lineup, but eventually worked her way up to the first position for the final 10 regular season matches and the BIG EAST Championships. The sophomore went 6-4 in the conference season and won her match against Cincinnati in three sets to help RU advance at the BIG EAST Championships.
In doubles, Petrini won eight of 10 league matches with playing partner senior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and tallied 15 victories overall.
“It is such an honor to be named to the All-BIG EAST Team,” said Petrini. “I am so happy I get to represent Rutgers in this positive way. I worked hard all year to improve my singles and really want to thank my partner Jen Holzberg because without her we wouldn't have been such a great doubles team this year. I also want to thank both my coaches for encouraging me every day in practice and believing in me.”
