PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 14, 2012) – Rutgers University women’s tennis won its fifth-consecutive BIG EAST match with a 6-1 victory over Pittsburgh University on Saturday at the RU Tennis Complex. The Scarlet Knights improved to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in the league with one more regular season contest left on the schedule.

“This was another strong win for the team today,” said ninth-year head coach Benjamin Bucca. “We have been playing well down the stretch and look forward to our regular season finale against West Virginia on Sunday.”

Rutgers continued its strong play at doubles, taking all three matches to secure the opening point. The first team of sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) improved to 13-5 for the season and 7-2 in conference matches with an 8-4 win over the Panthers’ top duo.

In singles, the Scarlet Knights took five of the six matches to seal the decision. Petrini prevailed at the top spot with a straight-set win, while freshman Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) earned a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory at the sixth position. Sophomore Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) also only dropped four games on the way to a two-set win.

Holzberg needed a breaker to take the first set at the second slot, and rolled in the second set to triumph. Freshman Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) picked up the fifth singles win of the day at the number fifth spot with a convincing 6-2 result in the second set.

Pittsburgh dropped to 10-8 and 5-5 in the conference, as the BIG EAST Championships are set to start on April 19 in Tampa, Fla.

Rutgers finishes off the regular season on Sunday against West Virginia at the RU Tennis Complex at 12 p.m. It will be the final home match for seniors Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas) and Holzberg.
