  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 4, 2012) - Rutgers University women’s tennis swept the University of Connecticut, 7-0, on Wednesday in the Scarlet Knights’ third true home match of the season, improving the team’s record to 4-1 at home overall. With the win, the squad improved its conference record to 4-3 amid a pivotal, four-match BIG EAST stretch to close the season.

“This was a very strong and convincing win against a well-coached and motivated UConn team that had won seven of its last eight matches,” said head coach Benjamin Bucca. “We played strong and aggressive tennis right from the beginning and it was a very good win for us. It gives us a lot of confidence as we are in the heart of an important part of our schedule against four BIG EAST teams.”

In a match largely commanded by Rutgers, sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) faced the toughest test of the afternoon in singles play. The No. 1 player for Rutgers eventually bested her opponent 6-4, 6-3 to improve her record to 9-7 and snap a three-match skid. Also snapping a three-match losing streak was senior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.). The Joel Barlow product defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-4 to move to 6-10 on the year.

In doubles play, RU’s No. 1 pair of Holzberg and Petrini returned to its winning ways with a decisive, 8-2 victory. The win moves the duo to 11-4 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. The teams of sophomore Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and freshman Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and sophomore Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) took home their matches as well, winning 8-4 and 8-5, respectively to cap the sweep.

It was the fifth 7-0 sweep of the season for RU.

Rutgers continues its BIG EAST slate with a trip to South Orange, N.J., next Thursday, when the Scarlet Knights visit intrastate foe Seton Hall.
