PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 22, 2012) – Playing on campus for the first time this season, Rutgers University women’s swept away Villanova University, 7-0, on a beautiful afternoon at the RU Tennis Complex. The Scarlet Knights improved to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST.

“It was great to be outside on our home court and play well today,” said assistant coach Hilary Tyler. “We came out ready to go from the start in doubles and never looked back from there. I felt like our spring break trip to South Carolina prepared us for playing outdoors and it really showed today. Hopefully we can take this momentum into our next match against St. John’s.”

Rutgers started out strong in doubles, taking all three matches in a timely fashion. The first team of senior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) bumped their record to 10-2 with an 8-1 victory. At the second position, senior Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and freshman Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) edged their opponent, 8-3, and the third tandem of sophomore Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) won 8-1 for their first conference victory of the season.

In singles, the Scarlet Knights won all six matches in straight sets. Holzberg took her contest quickly, 6-3, 6-0, with Balasa, Balsamo and Judeh finishing right behind to seal the win. Petrini, playing at the first spot for the third time this season, battled for a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Ivey closed out the sweep with several key points to win 6-2, 6-2.

It was the fourth 7-0 sweep of the season for RU.

Rutgers returns to the RU Tennis Complex on Sunday, March 25 for another BIG EAST match against St. John’s. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
