PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 21, 2012) – Rutgers University women’s tennis returns to action for two important BIG EAST matches at the RU Tennis Complex. The Scarlet Knights will take on Villanova University on Thursday, March 22 and St. John’s University on Sunday, March 25. Both matches will be played on campus and will start at 2 p.m.
Rutgers (6-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) is coming off a 1-2 spring break trip in Charleston, S.C., defeating Boston University but falling to the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern. Senior Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) won in straight sets in her hometown to help RU to a 5-2 win over the Terriers, with the team winning four of the six singles matches.
Villanova (2-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) will be playing its first conference match when it travels to Piscataway. The Wildcats recently have won against the State College of Florida and TCNJ, and played a match on Wednesday at Loyola (Md.). Steve Reiniger is in his 15th season as the head coach.
St. John’s (2-9, 1-1 BIG EAST) dropped a tight match, 4-3, at Harvard on Saturday, March 10 its last time out on the courts. Two seniors, Makita Austin and Ece Firat, and junior Nevena Selakovic all had victories on the day. Selakovic earned her seventh singles victory of the season, which is a team-best this season, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kristin Norton. Before taking on the Scarlet Knights, the Red Storm will challenge Pittsburgh on Friday, March 23. Eric Rebhuhn is the interim women’s coach this season.
