  • CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 14, 2012) – Playing for the third time in four days against a high-caliber opponent, Rutgers University tennis suffered a setback at Charleston Southern University, falling 7-0 on Wednesday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center. The match was delayed at points due to troublesome weather in the area.

“This was our third match on this trip against a team that clearly will contend for their conference championship,” said head coach Benjamin Bucca. “I thought we played tough, competitive tennis throughout, bringing out the best in Rutgers tennis. All of our players should be commended for their spirited play. I believe that this was a successful trip and we are primed to play our best tennis going into the heart of BIG EAST play.”

With the loss, the Scarlet Knights drop to 6-6, while the Buccaneers improved to 7-1. RU defeated Boston University, 5-2, Monday, but lost to the College of Charleston Sunday, 4-1.

The highlight for RU on the day was first doubles win by the tandem of senior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.). The duo is now 9-2 this season.

Rutgers travels back to New Jersey and will return to BIG EAST play with a home match against Villanova on March 22 at 2 p.m.
