  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 1, 2012) – Rutgers University women’s tennis returns to action with a pair of matches in Milwaukee, Wis., this weekend. The Scarlet Knights will take on Marquette on Friday, March 2 at 2 p.m. EST and No. 38 DePaul on Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. EST in a neutral site match. Both contests will be played at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

“We are looking forward to taking on two top-tier programs this weekend,” said head coach Benjamin Bucca. “Both should be close matches and we will have to play our best to win. This is also our first true road trip, giving us the opportunity to continue to build team chemistry.”

Rutgers (5-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) is coming off a hard-fought win over Georgetown on Feb. 24, 4-3. After dropping the doubles point, the team rallied to win four of six singles matches to clinch the match, coming down to sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) winning her match in a third set tiebreaker. Petrini and classmate Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) lead the team with a 6-1 singles record.

In its last time out, Marquette (7-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) dropped to Wisconsin, 4-3, on Sunday, Feb. 26. The loss broke the team’s four-match winning streak and was the first home defeat of the season for the Golden Eagles. MU defeated RU 4-3 in match at the Atlantic Club last season. Jody Bronson is in her 27th season as the leader of the program.

DePaul (9-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) enters the match ranked No. 38 in the latest ITA rankings after beating No. 31 Arkansas, 4-3, on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Blue Demons moved up 35 spots in the poll with the win. DPU knocked the Scarlet Knights out of the BIG EAST Championships in the quarterfinals, 4-2, last season. Head coach Mark Ardizzone is in his 16th season with the Blue Demons.
