PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 4, 2009) – Senior Shayna Longacre (Barto, Pa.) of the Rutgers swimming and diving team earned Women’s Swimming & Diving BIG EAST Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday, after a highlight reel weekend for the Scarlet Knights. The senior earned three individual first place finishes, including one pool record, and helped three relay squads to a first place finish, including setting two pool records. RU defeated BIG EAST foes UConn, 199-155, and Villanova, 193-150 over the weekend.
Individually, Longacre touched the wall in 51.51 for a first-place finish in the 100 free. She won the 200 free with a time of 1:52.30. In the 100 breaststroke, the Barto, Pa. native set a new pool record at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium with a time of 1:04.15. That mark broke her previous pool record set in 2007.
Longacre swam the second leg of the 400 free, 200 medley, and 200-free relay races. With the 400 free, the team (Melanie Gaffey, Longacre, Jackie Klein, and Brittney Kuras) touched the wall at 3:28.21 for the pool record and first-place finish. The 200-medley squad earned first with a time of 1:46.48. The 200 free – Gaffey, Longacre, Brianne Lindblad, and Kuras – set a pool record with a time of 1:36.23.
RU returns to action at home on Nov. 14 against West Virginia. The meet kicks off at 1 p.m.
